Cell Phone Phobia: Blessing or Curse
Mobile Corner

According to Aesop necessity is the mother of invention and the necessity to make a man easily approachable at any time brought the invention of cellular phones. In the age of IT, traditional phones were insufficient to fulfill the professional demands and the excessive mobility of modern man gave birth to mobile phones. The major motive behind that invention was to make the feasibility to contact the relevant person in case of dire need or emergency. Now the question arises; was the introduction of cell phones in our daily life was a blessing or curse?

No doubt the invention of cell phone was the demand of changing life style where the concept of traditional offices and workplaces is dying. Now a professional (doctor, engineer, teacher, lawyer, and businessman) is bound to render his services at different places. Cell phone has become indispensable for a competent busy professional. A quality cell phone provides services like note-book, watch, laptop, alarm, news update, recording, music etc. Users love to send poetry, maxims, sayings through SMS and it has become an important source of catharsis and intellectual refreshment which is giving a new life to a dying literary culture. But there are some darker aspects of this phenomenon. At the start cell phones’ prices were too high and a decade ago it was considered as a status symbol in under-developed countries. But with the mushrooming of different national and multi-national companies, its prices were reduced rapidly. Now any one can afford it. Whenever a thing becomes cheap, it will lose its value and its negative usage will start. As it is happening now days. Vulgar messages, unnecessary call, loss of privacy, high call-rates in the guise of low-rate packages have converted this blessing into a curse. Big organizations usually provide cell phones to their employees to trace them at any moment, even after office hours. Cell phones are also becoming one of the major sources of moral-degradation. Now the targeted consumers of different cell phone companies are teen-agers and youngsters. Especially in the frustrated societies of third-world countries, these companies target youth through attractive advertisements, obnoxious call-packages like ‘late-night offer’ package in which youngsters are depicted as lovers who are just wasting their precious time in self-deception and futile activities. Parents feel hapless as any one can intrudes in the bed-room of their kids through cell phone. Due to so-called low call rates and non-professional social set-ups, people waste their precious time in unnecessary calls. While in Western countries, people usually power-off their cell phones on week-ends and family holidays to secure their privacy. They use mobile phone in its true meaning and purpose. Now it can be easily understood why different multi-national companies are veraciously targeting depressed masses of under-developed countries.

Behind every invention there is a selected class who should use it. It is the duty of concerned government and moral responsibility of companies to design a code of conduct about their sales policies and advertisements. Cell phones were made to facilitate professional duties not to promote love affairs. They should target professionals not teen-agers. Otherwise this misuse of technology can push us back toward cave age.
