IT has opened new vistas and media has supplemented awareness, freedom of expression, intellectual movements all over the world. Especially in recent decades the role of electronic media has been pivotal in educating the society. That’s why it is considered as fourth pillar in all democratic societies. IT has helped media in the coverage of different stories, exposition of subtle hidden facts, competition of breaking news and cross-questioning with different movers and shakers of societies. Media has transformed passive, introvert and reactive societies into extrovert, proactive and active masses. Bygone are those days when loopholes were covered, negligence were concealed and reports were buried under the carpets and accountability was non-existent. Now people ask questions about high inflation rate, increase in unemployment, government’s policies and other national and international affairs. These are aftermaths of media’s penetration in our societies. But there are some dark aspects of this paradigm shift as well. Media creates hype about any incident or accident with their live coverage, which results into restlessness, intolerance and mass hysteria due to sense of insecurity. In print media, yellow journalism and mud-slugging are used for political victimization. In the rat- race of westernization media is crossing the boundaries of sobriety, decency, social taboos and moral responsibilities. Viewers are becoming psycho by observing gruesome scenes after suicidal attacks on their screens. It is also creating a gap between masses and government. In third world countries, the credibility of politicians is always at stake. There should be a crystal clear priorities-list for media especially about patriotism, geo-political situation and social responsibility. Authenticity should be ensured and exaggeration should be condemned. |
